Mixing up the working from home lifestyle

Max loves his consulting work but needed to get out of the house and Airtasker helps him not only do that but also meet other great people in the community.

It’s a love of meeting new people that brought Max, who has a background in health and safety consulting, to Airtasker. We discovered the great lengths that Max will go to help others and some of his stories are surprisingly touching. Excelling in small item pick-up and delivery, and dropping people off at various locations, Max sure has a tale or two so let’s dive in.

So why Airtasker?

“I have a consulting business that I run from home to help other small to medium businesses with health and safety systems and programs. I really enjoy it but it doesn’t really allow me to get out of the house very often and that’s something I miss. I’ve also had a long career in IT and even some programming experience after completing a degree in Mathematics at Macquarie University. And so, Airtasker just clicked for me one day when I realised that having a ute gives me a unique opportunity to help others.

The flexibility that Airtasker gives me is something which works so well and helps me create my own little pot of money that I can put towards savings or bills. It’s more than the money though, I relish in helping people whenever and wherever.

Tasker Snapshot

  • Pick-up and delivery specialist
  • Over 55 completed tasks since May 2018
  • 5-star rating
  • 98% Completion rate

What types of tasks do you do?

I really just focus on the transportation of people and things (that fit into my ute). I’m really flexible and I don’t mind if I’m helping people over the weekend or late at night. So far, it has been such a great adventure.

When I make an offer on a task, I just need to know what exactly the task entails and a bit of detail to make sure that I can complete it to the best of my ability.

It’s a little bit funny, as most of the people I work with are young professionals and families they are a generation of sending a text message rather than calling, but because I’m always driving I can’t respond. So I need to make sure that I ask people to call instead of text.

You have some great task stories, can you share those?

Absolutely – I have three very memorable stories…

A guy posted a task who was stranded in Melbourne and needed an emergency passport to fly overseas. So I needed to go into the city and pick up the passport from the embassy and then head to Sydney Domestic Airport and find people that were willing to take it to Melbourne – this turned out to be the hard part. I approached a few people (around the same age as me) and got some strange looks and a lot of nos. Then I saw a couple of younger guys sitting around, so I walked up to them and told them about my dilemma and they were happy to help. It was only then that I revealed that the Poster said that I could give the people $50 as a thank you for their efforts. The Poster received his passport and was ecstatic that it all worked out.

My next story is about a lady who posted a task from her best friend’s wedding up on the Central Coast of NSW. Mid-ceremony they realised there was a mistake with the DJ/band booking, so she jumped on Airtasker and posted an urgent DJ required task. I had worked with DJ Daroc a week prior and knew he’d be up for it, so I sent him a text message with the task and he got the job! It’s tasks like that which show the power of the community network.

My last awesome Airtasker story that a guy posted a task because he missed his flight to Mudgee and needed a lift. I was up for the job and on our way, we stopped at a petrol station where I accidentally left my wallet behind and only realised once we were 30 minutes away. So the Poster jumped on the phone straight away and because they were closing soon, got them to wrap and hide it in a specific spot so I could find it when I was driving back past the station on my way home. That was such a lovely act of kindness that he was willing to help me too.

One last thing about me…

You’ll see a picture of my vintage caravan on my profile, I really love them and I have a couple of caravans. We get to travel around and see Australia in them and hoping to go to Ayres Rock and Darwin in the future. But my number one spot is Mystery Bay. It’s an absolute must!”
