Your one-stop-shop for maintenance and installation reviews, features and more...

Thinking about getting a dishwasher for your home (do it – it will change your life!) or perhaps you’re replacing an old one that’s no longer cleaning properly? Well, you’ve come to the right spot because we’re taking a look at the best dishwashers in 2020 from every point of view.

From dishwasher installation and maintenance to plumber reviews, let’s find a dishwasher that will go the distance for you.

To help clear up any questions to have and to hear a plumbers perspective we asked Dan, a qualified plumber on Airtasker, to provide his professional opinion on the different dishwasher types and dishwasher brands. You’ll see quotes from Dan throughout, plus his reliability, maintenance and installation scores for each.

So let’s start off with the different types of dishwashers (e.g. freestanding vs. built-in) and then onto the dishwasher brand comparison.

What is the best dishwasher type?

There are so many different types of dishwashers and it really depends on your space, what you need, and of course your budget. Here’s a quick list of the different types of dishwashers we’re going to look at:

  1. Freestanding
  2. Integrated or built-in
  3. Semi-integrated
  4. Dishdrawer
  5. Slimline
  6. Benchtop

Our qualified Plumber Dan has scored each dishwasher type between 1-10 (1 = poor, 10 = excellent) in terms of reliability, maintenance and installation, see in the table below:

Freestanding dishwasher

It’s a flexible dishwasher that can be either built-in or portable. In other words, you don’t have to worry about specific cabinetry being built to house it in. Perhaps it’s not the most design-friendly option but if you’re renting or want to take it when you move, that’s really easy to do with a freestanding dishwasher.

Freestanding dishwasher prices can range from $390-$2800 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “Easy to install and just as easy to remove for maintenance because they are separte from the kitchen cabinets, so access for plumbers is great.”

Dan’s freestanding dishwasher pick: Miele

  • The HygienePlus program kills 99.9% of bacteria in its extra hot final rinse.

Integrated dishwasher (built-in dishwasher)

These dishwashers are completely hidden behind cabinetry, which has been custom-built for the size of the dishwasher you want. With a fully-integrated dishwasher, your kitchen will look amazing with this high-end finish.

When the dishwasher is closed, it just looks like another cabinet door in your kitchen. So if you’re wondering where the dishwasher controls are, they are on the top of the dishwasher door when you open it. By putting your dishwasher behind cabinetry, it means that while on a wash cycle your dishwasher will be quieter than a freestanding dishwasher. But just note that it’s also permanently there, so if you move, it’s left behind with your previous home.

When buying a built-in dishwasher, measurements are everything! You need to be precise and get the specific measurements so that it fits like a glove. And you also need to make sure that you get the front cabinet door from the same supplier as rest of your kitchen cabinetry. The good news is that there are standard dishwasher sizes for fully-integrated dishwashers and you can get adjustable legs to match your bench heights – so you shouldn’t have too much trouble with this.

The maintenance costs for fully integrated dishwashers are higher because of the limited access points and also specific plumbing work that is required for installation.

Built-in dishwasher prices start from $890-$2900 approximately.

Fully integrated dishwasher prices start from $900-$4300 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “Hard to remove for maintance purposes and more time consuming when you need the dishwasher installed because it’s integrated into your cabintery. So your costs will be higher, although integrated dishwashers are very asthetically pleasing when it comes to kitchen design.”

Dan’s fully integrated dishwasher pick: Miele

Semi-integrated dishwasher

Similar to the built-in or fully integrated dishwasher, a semi-integrated dishwasher is still installed into your kitchen cabinetry. It’s different because you can still see the control panel on the outside of the dishwasher but the bottom panel can be matched to your kitchen cabinets.

Semi-integrated dishwasher prices start from  $890-$2,000 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “Just like the fully integrated dishwashers, semi-integrated dishwashers are difficult when it comes to maintenance and installation (although slightly better than fully integrated). But on the flip side, they also look great for a streamlined kitchen.”

Dan’s semi-integrated dishwasher pick: Miele

DishDrawer Dishwasher

Wish you could have two separate dishwashers in the one regular dishwasher 60cm space? Enter the DishDrawer dishwasher where you can have two separate drawers, which means you can have one drawer running whilst stacking the other. It also means you can put all your pots and pans in one for a heavy wash and your delicate glassware in the other.

There’s also a single dish DishDrawer dishwasher which is perfect for your butler’s pantry or in your small kitchen if you don’t have much space.

While the DishDrawer dishwashers are slightly less energy efficient than their traditional counterparts, the convenience factor is notable.

Double DishDrawer dishwashers range in price from $1500-$2000 approximately.

Single DishDrawer dishwashers are $1500 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “DishDrawers offer great flexibility when it comes to putting different loads on, however, they are generally more expensive than a traditional dishwasher. They can be a little more difficult to maintan and install as well, just it depends on if you get an integreated DishDrawer or not.”

Slimline dishwasher

These are perfect for apartments with small kitchens, studios or again if you’re lucky to have a second dishwasher in your butler’s pantry. The obvious downside is the size as they come with a width of approximately 450mm (compared to the 600mm of a standard dishwasher). This means they are perfect for a couple or maybe three people, but not exactly family-friendly.

On the other hand, they use less water and energy, compared to the standard size – just remember to check those energy and water efficiency ratings.

If you’re getting a slimline dishwasher lookout for multiple wash cycles, delay starts and dirtiness senors. These can all make sure that you’re getting the most out of your dishwasher.

Slimline dishwasher prices start from $510-$1530 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “These are very well suited to small kitchens. They are easy to install and also remove for maintenance purposes if you get a freestanding slimline dishwasher.”

Benchtop dishwasher

If you don’t have the space for a built-in dishwasher nor a freestanding dishwasher, a benchtop dishwasher is another compact option for you. This makes it ideal again for apartments, studios and people renting.

Due to its compact size, it’s really just for couples who don’t want to do any handwashing or perhaps the elderly. But it’s important to be aware that they aren’t the most energy-efficient option and run on cold water input.

Benchtop dishwasher prices start from $510-$699 approximately.

Plumber Dan: “Benchtop dishwashers are generally a lower cost than the alternatives, but you will sacrifice bench space which is why I scored it high when it comes to installation. Maintenance is also easy for the same reason. ”

At the top of the range is the Swedish brand Asko, which prides themselves on the high-quality and durability of their products. They also really cater to the different needs of their customers, for example, if you love dinner parties, they have a special program just for crystal glassware and china guards to protect your precious items.

A few other programs that are worth mentioning are the sanitisation and plastic programs, as well as all the other usual programs, allowing you to pick the right setting for what you need to be cleaned. Some other special features that they are large in size and the capacity that they can take and these dishwashers have flexible racks so that you can fit more things in safely.

Plumber Dan: “A good quality and stylish product, but it’s relatively more expensive than other brands.”

Miele dishwashers

Miele is a household name when it comes to the high-end of appliances. Exceeding in quality and standards, Miele constantly endeavours to improve energy ratings and lower water consumption.

With the company remaining family-owned, Miele appliances are still made in Germany and they see sustainability as one of their key values.

Being one of the premium dishwasher makers, there are some unique programs that need to be highlighted, such as, the pasta/ paella setting to remove starch and Hygiene clean program for sanitisation of kids items or chopping boards. But the program next up is one of the most unique of all, Miele’s SolarSave program can be used if you have a solar heat system installed which will use the temperature of the already heated water. This means you can minimise the need for conventional electricity and your overall power consumption.

There are also ExtraDry, Glass Wash, MachineCare, EcoSilence programs, which all cater to your different needs.

Plumber Dan: “Bosch is another brand that produces solid quality products. And when it comes to cost, you’re generally getting good value for money.”

Dishwasher FAQs

What is the WELS water rating?

The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme (also known as WELS) helps consumers in Australia compare the water efficiency for different products and appliances.

You’ll see WELS ratings on dishwashers, washing machines, showers, taps, toilets etc. And once the products are tested, they will be given a rating of up to 6 stars.

You can actually find all products and their WELS rating on the product database from the Australian Government.

What does the energy star ratings mean?

The Energy Rating Label helps consumers compare the running costs and energy efficiency or appliances to help keep your electricity bills lower.

Appliances and products generally have a rating from 1-6 but as technology changes and adapts to new ways, you might see some brands/ products getting ratings up to 10.
