Five ways to use Airtasker to maintain and improve your property

Keep your house spic and span without lifting a finger!

Five ways to use Airtasker to maintain and improve your property

It’s likely you’ve used Airtasker to help build your website or revamp your resumé, but have you ever thought about using it to maintain your property? But it doesn’t just make your life easier digitally, it can also improve your physical space as well! Airtasker brings a world of talent right to your doorstep, so here are some ways we can help you keep your house spic and span with only a few taps on the app!

Gardening

It doesn’t get much easier than this! All you have to do is let people know where you are, what you want doing, and how much you’re willing to pay. You might not like gardening very much, but for someone else, it might be the thing that they really love doing, so why not let them find their bliss while weeding your backyard?

Handymen to the rescue!

We’re all guilty of this one. You’ve got pictures to hang on the wall, a light globe to change, but you’ll do it later, right? Come on let’s be honest you’d rather be watching the new season of Stranger Things, not working out which nails to use. Why not ask a handyman to come and be handy at your place? You can watch the TV, they can do the job they’re best at and you can both leave happy.

Moving furniture and removing clutter

Do you have some furniture you desperately want moving, but can’t lift it by yourself? Looking for someone to take some rubbish to the tip but you have no way of getting it there? Airtasker has you covered, all you need to let people know is when and where, and the army of Airtaskers there will be lining up to help you move (or ditch) that clutter around your house. So long as you let them know what they’ll be moving, they can make the appropriate arrangements to make sure you’re all happy.

All your cleaning needs

It doesn’t matter what you count as cleaning there is someone on Airtasker who is happy to do it. Dusting? Absolutely. Mopping and vacuuming? Of course! End-of-lease cleans? They have you covered. If you need an invoice for your landlord, make sure you tell the Airtasker and voila! You’ll be set someone will come to your home, clean it for you and leave. You don’t need cash, and you don’t need to worry about fitting into their schedule because you’ve already told them when you need it done by and paid for it through Airtasker. It couldn’t be easier!

Don’t be afraid to get creative

The joy of a site like Airtasker is that you never know who’s looking to pick up some work on the side.  You might have a problem that you think is too out there for someone to fix, but that’s just what Airtasker is all out! There are always plenty of out-of-the-box tasks posted such as ‘Make a Chewbacca costume’, ‘Queue for Harry Styles concert tickets’ or even ‘Build a Tiki bar’. There’s always someone who’s a perfect fit for the job you have in mind, so why not put it out there into the universe and see what comes back?

If you’re worried about letting people into your house? Airtasker has multiple badges available for Airtaskers to verify their identity, licences and whether they’re involved with our partner brands. On Airtasker people also get reviews after a task is done and they also have a Completion Rate, which shows how reliable they are when they put their hand up for the task.  Airtasker is all about best offers, not first offers, so don’t be afraid to wait for your perfect match. Don’t waste the beautiful summer weather doing the things you like the least hire a professional through Airtasker and let them do the heavy lifting for you!

Looking for a makeover to make your home look even better? Airtasker is running a $2,000 Home Makeover giveaway with Soho where you will receive an IKEA gift voucher as well as Airtasker credit to assemble all your furniture. How to keep indoor plants alive

Want to have a house filled with indoor plants? So do we!

How to keep indoor plants alive

We’d all love to have fiddle leaf figs, peace lilies and aloe vera plants all throughout our homes but there’s always the challenge of how to keep indoor plants alive?

If you’re like me, no matter which way I try, the plants always end up dying. More water, less water, more sunlight, less sunlight – what is the magic solution? Let’s find out!

Water

Are the leaves on your plant turning brown? It probably means that you’re not watering it properly. But be careful, overwatering can also cut off the air supply to the roots (root rot).

Check moisture levels by using your finger and put it into the soil, if it’s dry it’s time to water.

After watering, leave for a while before watering again so the plant can dry out properly to make sure you don’t overwater.

If you still don’t think you’ll be able to regularly water your plants, perhaps opt for one that doesn’t need as much water. Here are some to look at:

  • Snake plant
  • Cactus
  • Rubber plant
  • ZZ plant
  • Ponytail palm tree

Humidity

Lack of humidity in the air can also be responsible for browning leaves because a lot of indoor plants are used to warmer conditions. So if your home is a little dry, spray your plant with some water every few days.

If you have heaters and air conditioners, many plants won’t like this either as they go from a normal zone to extreme.

Get some more indoor gardening ideas.

Sunlight

The best piece of advice here is the read the label, when you go to the nursery they always tell you which plant suits which environment. If you don’t get a lot of sunlight indoors, don’t get a plant that needs constant sun.

You might be tempted to move around your plants a lot so that they get some sunlight. But don’t move them around too much because they get used to their surroundings and they might not adjust well to the new spot.

If you see your plant starting to lean to one side, just turn it around so it straightens up to follow the sun.

Fertilizer & soil

The potting mix or fertilizer you choose impacts a lot of the success of your plant because different plants need different soils.

For bigger plants, you’ll need something that’s breathable and soilless compared to succulents, which need a dryer mix that is combined with sand.

When it comes to fertilizer, just like the outdoor plants, the indoor ones need to eat too. You can get specific indoor plant food – just ask at your local nursery.

Repotting

If your plant doesn’t seem to be growing it might need to be re-potted so that it has better water retention and also faster growth. To re-pot simply:

  1. Choose a bigger pot
  2. Use new potting mix in the new pot and up to 1/3 full
  3. Loosen the existing plant, stretch out the roots a little, and put into new pot
  4. Top up with some potting mix and water well
Add pebbles to the base of the pot before adding the potting mix to help with drainage.

Cleaning & grooming

Just like everything else in your home your indoor plants will gather dust. Make sure they stay healthy by giving them a good clean every so often with some warm water and then allow them to dry in the sun.

For large-leafed plants, use a damp cloth and your hand under to support them and wipe them.

For fuzzy-leafed plants use either a soft paintbrush or toothbrush to clear any dust off the leaf.

For small plants that are young or small succulents, use your fingers to hold the dirt down and then tip upside down and place in a bowl of water.

Grooming your plants is just as important as everything else mentioned above. If there are dead leaves in the pot, remove them so that dust doesn’t gather up.

To make life easier though, you could always just hire a gardener on Airtasker!

Finger food

Move over sausage rolls and blinis – there are so many other tasty treats that you can make for your guests. Here are a few of our faves:

  • Duck pancakes (Either get your local Korean restaurant to shred the duck for you, or you can buy prepared duck breast from the supermarket).
  • Edamame or beetroot dip instead of the hummus or French onion.
  • Deviled eggs (it’s a classic but making a come back).
  • Bacon wrapped brussel sprouts (see below).

BBQ

It’s hard to go past a sausage sandwich and a lamb chop on the barbie but if you’re having a nice summer bbq outside, get some chicken and veggies to make fresh kebabs. Or another fun idea is to set up a burger station and have all the add-ons lined up so that people can make their burgers.

And yes it’s still ok to still put on some sausages – just grab some of the gourmet ones like pork and apple, or lamb and fetta.

Sit-down meals

Organising a dinner party for an intimate group or a Christmas dinner takes a lot more preparation than a simple BBQ, but there’s still a few tips and tricks that you can use here to make it a lot easier for yourself.

Research salads and sides that you can prepare well in advance and then knock together last minute. These could be quinoa, farro or another grain-based salad which you can make in the morning and prepare all the additional elements on the side.

For the main event, look at something that you can make in large quantities or bulk, such as a roast or slow-cooked dish. Both are perfect for winter. In the summertime, you might want to look at a whole fish which you could roast or bbq.

Have you thought about getting a personal chef to help? They can save you lots of time and effort in the kitchen and getting a little extra help from an Airtasker could be just the help you need.

Think about making a beautiful coffee tea cake, or some old-fashioned scones with jam and cream. If there are kids in tow, make some pretty butterfly cupcakes, which if you have old enough kids they can help with too.

What’s old is new again

Source: Pinterest

We couldn’t do this article without paying homage to some of our all-time favourite party foods but also give them a modern twist.

Mac ‘n Cheese

Who doesn’t love a bit of mac and cheese but instead of a big bow divide it up into muffin tins, so that everyone can easily grab one!

Pizza squares

Instead of the traditional pizza, change it up with some puff pastry and make pizza squares by putting the toppings on top of the pastry. These can be served for both kids and adults.

Fairy bread

It’s the ultimate classic but you can change it up but swapping butter for Nutella or even better – fairy bread lamingtons. The kids will love it!

Fairy bread delivery

Someone please make me fairy bread on nice white soft bread with a good amount of butter and drop it to my house in Bronte.

How to paint window frames and door frames

Windows and doors need a little bit of extra painting TLC, here's why!

How to paint window frames and door frames

It’s arguably the hardest part of the painting process, and although patience and a steady hand will get you most of the way, there are some tips and tricks that you need to know to make window and door painting a lot easier and quicker. Here’s our guide on how to paint window frames and also door frames.

Clean & painting prep

Cleaning and preparing the windows are an absolute must if you want to have a great shiny and smooth finish. To start with remove curtains and fixtures, this will make it a lot easier to paint and ensure you don’t have as much of a clean up at the end.

To clean all the spiderwebs and dust use a sugar soap, which will give you a clean surface to paint on.

Don’t forget on the top of the window sill, you might not be able to see it, but it’s still worthwhile cleaning the dust for a complete finish.

Now it’s time to lay down the drop sheets (old bed sheets will do!) under the frame so that you don’t drop any paint on the floor.

Masking tape

This is essential for windows and door frames where you have two different colours and want smooth lines. For windows, you’ll need to put masking tape on both the wall and also the glass.

To get straight edges when you line the tape up, push the edges down where the paint will meet the tape. For corners, use a knife to tear it for a perfect seal.

When removing the masking tape afterwards, rip it off slowly at an angle before the paint completely dries otherwise it might cause the paint to rip too.

If there are any other larger parts that you need to paint around which can’t be removed, use paper towels to cover and then tape to hold it in place.

Filling in and patching

Everything gets scratches and holes after a little while – it’s just a part of being a homeowner! You can use a little bit of filler with a putty knife to fill in the hole. Then use a damp cloth to remove any excess and help to give it a smooth surface – and less sanding!

Brushes and painting

Now for the fun part – painting time! Grab an angled and dip it halfway into the paint (you don’t need a lot of on your brush) and then tap it on the bucket.

When you start to paint, go closest to the glass first so that you can make your way out, so you don’t smudge it as you go. After you’ve finished the inside, do the frame that faces the room.

Depending on the paint and the previous colour, you might need multiple coats.

Cleaning up

Remove the masking tape slowly before the paint has completely dried. If it’s already dried, have a knife handy to help cut away the tape without peeling your beautiful paintwork.

Packing up the drop sheets, store any unused paint for touch ups and clean brushes and store them correctly to use again for your next painting project.

Which is the best outdoor furniture for you?

Relax and enjoy your garden with the right furniture for your space

Which is the best outdoor furniture for you?

Summer is right around the corner and what better way to enjoy your backyard than with some new outdoor furniture. These days it goes way beyond the usual plastic 6-seater table and chairs. You have so much choice including size, materials, heights and functionality. So to help you when you’re starting to look for something new, we’ve broken down the different outdoor furniture types and some additional tips to think about.

Bar outdoor furniture

Outdoor bar sets work great for apartments with a balcony where you can sit up just that little bit higher and take in your amazing view. It’s also perfect for those of you with a pool – then all you need is a pina colada!

Source: Home Depot

The only two things to consider with a higher table is that you’re limited to entertaining smaller groups because you won’t be able to add multiple tables for bigger dos, and it also doesn’t really work for families with younger kids.

Lounge sets vs. dining sets

Are you the more formal or informal hosts? Will you still eat inside or have a full sit down dinner outside? These are some of the questions to ask yourself because while it’s nice to have an outdoor dining set, it might be better to just have a lounge set.

This way you can use it when you relax with the Sunday paper and a cuppa, and also for informal pre-dinner drinks before you head inside to sit for mains during a dinner party.

These sets will normally be delivered as flatpacks, but you can help the time fly by, by getting an Airtasker to help with the furniture assembly.

Outdoor daybeds

Daybeds are great for limited space in pool areas or chill-out zones in smaller backyards. There are a few types that you can get depending on your styling e.g. cabana style, pod sofas or canopy daybeds.

Coordinated furniture sets

If you have a large backyard with various areas to furnish, it’s really important that your garden flows and by getting a matching outdoor garden set, you can achieve this very easily.

What about the material?

By now you have a pretty good idea about what type of furniture is going to work for you, but what about the style and material. Here’s a little bit of inspiration below:

Can you DIY?

Source: Pinterest

Absolutely! There is lots of outdoor furniture inspo around and it’s amazing what you can do with a few pallets and a sewing machine. But to get some help to make it become a reality, get a handyman who’s done it before to help you out.

Now it’s time to invite friends and family over to enjoy your beautiful garden. Get some outdoor entertaining ideas about lighting, styling and more!

10 Spring cleaning hacks for your home

Get around the extra work this spring with these tricks!

10 Spring cleaning hacks for your home

The days are longer and a little warmer, yes that’s right it’s finally Spring again! However, that also means it’s time to de-clutter and give your house a good spring clean. Although the extra work can make it seem like a monstrous weekend-long chore, we’ve collected a few simple hacks that will see you finished with your spring cleaning in no time.

From organising your house to polishing glasses, the list of to-do’s can be endless but here are 10 of the best spring cleaning hacks:

Dusting the ceiling fan

Before you pick up the feather duster and make a mess all over the room as you try to clean the top of the ceiling fan, grab an old pillow case and put it over the fan arm to scrape the dust straight into the pillow case. This will save you from having the dust the room and vacuum afterwards.

Organise your wardrobe

Deciding what clothes to throw away is a tough choice and one we really don’t like to make. Why? Because we all have ‘that’ dress which brings back nostalgic memories of first dates, birthdays, or maybe you feel fab in it but it’s literally falling apart and time for it to go.

So to make it easier for see what you really do and don’t wear try hanging all of your coat hangers in the opposite direction to what you normally autonomously put the away. Then in a few weeks, you’ll be able to see which coat hangers are still in the original direction and think about donating those to charity.

Messy drawers no more

We’ve all been guilty of just shoving clean washing into a drawer without folding it, which means it’s impossible to find anything, you can’t get as much in and not to mention it will need some serious ironing to get the creases out.

An easy solution is to pack t-shirts vertical instead of horizontal. You’ll be able to fit more and also find your fave tees in a few seconds – without making a mess!

Source: Imgur

Clean your vases

Getting rid of the grime in vases can be not only difficult but also gross. To get around it, add a cup of uncooked rice, warm water and half a cup of window cleaner and mix it around.

Your vase will be sparkling clean and ready for fresh flowers in a jiffy.

Plantation shutter dusting

They sure do look pretty but plantation shutters are not the easiest blinds to clean. Lucky we’ve stumbled across a quick hack that we can use, all you need is a knife (not a sharp one) and a microfiber cloth to wrap around it. This you can go through each slat to pick up the dust easily.

Dusting lamp shades

Do you find that the dust just sticks to lamp shades and doesn’t want to budge? Well, we have the hack for you! Use a run-of-the-mill clothing lint roller to roll over the outside and inside of your lamp shades.

Shower curtain mould

To get rid of the mouldy build-up on your shower curtain you can simply throw it in the washing machine. Or if you don’t want to do that make a natural cleaning solution, which you could reuse every few weeks.

Make your own natural shower curtain cleaner by getting an empty spray bottle which you can fill with half vinegar and half water. Then stretch the curtain to it’s full width (so that you can get in the creases) and spray the vinegar solution. Leave for a couple of minutes and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Bathroom grout cleaning

Scrubbing grout is very labour intensive and all your efforts may not even remove the most stubborn mould. So to make it a bit easier on yourself, soak cotton wool in bleach and then place along the mouldy grout. This will get rid (or at least make it easier to scrub) of the mould and save you time and effort.

Clearing out the drain

Drains can become easily clogged up with bits of food getting stuck. You can buy drain cleaners, but for a chemical free alternative just use baking soda and vinegar. You will need to have 2 cups of baking soda, 4 cups of boiling water and 1 cup of vinegar at your disposal.

Follow these steps:

  • Pour 1 cup of baking soda carefully down the drain and then 2 cups of the boiling water. Wait a few moments.
  • Pour another cup of baking soda, then the cup of vinegar and immediately plug the drain as bubbles will rise.
  • When the bubbles die down slightly, pour the remaining 2 cups of boiling water.

We love baking soda as an alternative natural cleaning solution, so we’ve also put together a guide on how to clean ovens with baking soda.

Dusting high ceilings

Get to those hard to reach places, like ceiling corners, by using a broom with a microfibre cloth at the end and you’ll be able to clear any dust or cobwebs.

If you’re having trouble with the cloth staying put, just use a big elastic band or some string to keep it in place.

Or perhaps the best hack yet? Use and Airtasker and you won’t need to lift a finger and still get the spring cleaning ticked off your to-do list.

Got any other hacks? Share with us in the comments below, we love hearing about new ways make cleaning easier.
