Top Sliding Door Repair related questions

On Airtasker, the average cost of a sliding door repair is $100 to $350. If you need complex repairs, replacement, or multiple sliding doors repaired, you can expect to pay more. The cost of installing a new sliding door can range from $40 to $60 per hour. This depends on the materials, location, and labour needed for the project. Be specific when posting your task to get the best quote for sliding door repair in your area.

If you notice that your sliding door is becoming difficult to slide open, it’s probably time to call a professional to do repairs. A damaged door frame or cracks on glass sliding doors are also signs you need to look for.

With regular maintenance, you shouldn’t experience too many problems with your sliding doors and they should last decades. Generally, glass sliding doors can be expected to last about 30 years.

To prepare for the sliding door service, move away any objects around the door that may get in the way of the repair service. You may also need to tie up any pets in the area so technicians can provide door repair services and maintenance without any distractions.

Depending on what type of repair is being done, your handyman will bring a drill, screwdriver, pliers, pry bar, tape measure, level, screws, rubber mallet, and safety goggles. They may also bring replacement parts, like replacement rollers. Consult your local handyman on items or materials you need to prepare for the job.

The most common problems with sliding doors are dirty tracks and worn rollers. Jammed locks and a damaged door frame are also common due to wear and tear.

General Maintenance

What does a sliding door repair service include?

Sliding door repair specialists can help you repair your door whether you need a simple replacement part, or you need to replace the door entirely. Whether you need help fixing the panels of a sliding balcony door or repairing sliding patio doors, Taskers are here to help. Though the method of repair may vary between handymen, here’s what you can expect from a standard maintenance and repair service:

Cleaning out the tracks

The most common cause of a difficult-to-open sliding door is debris in the lower track. The channel can easily become clogged with dirt and disrupt the rollers on the door. The first step of your sliding door track repair service is to clean it out. The repairer will clean out the lower and upper tracks using a stiff brush, toothbrush, and a hand vacuum. After the tracks are thoroughly cleaned, they’ll apply an aerosol lubricant to both the upper and lower tracks.

Roller repair

Need sliding door roller repair? If the door is still difficult to open after the track is clean, your repairer will adjust the rollers at the bottom of the door. Rollers can wear down with time and lower the bottom of the door, causing the door to rub against the track. Most sliding doors have an adjusting screw located at the bottom of the door ends that raises and lowers the roller. The handyman will adjust this screw until the door stops rubbing on the bottom track and it becomes easier to slide open and close.

Roller replacement

If the roller on the sliding door is damaged beyond repair, the handyman may decide the best remedy is to replace it entirely. The stiles of the moving panel are first unscrewed and removed to detach the door. One handyman will lift the door so that the other handyman can slide the bottom rail over. The roller can be unscrewed, removed, and replaced. The door is put back into place, and the rollers are adjusted so the door sits squarely in the frame.

Door replacement

Planning to install new doors? If your whole sliding door needs to be replaced, your handyman will take the same steps to remove the door, as they would if they were replacing the roller. However, instead of replacing the roller, they’ll remove the door entirely, and replace it with a new one. They’ll clean the tracks and adjust the rollers so your new door can operate smoothly.

Fix sliding door lock (Doric) not closing or latching properly

$200

Burraneer NSW 2230, Australia

7th Jul 2026

I’ve got an aluminium sliding door with a Doric locking system that isn’t closing or latching properly. The lock turns, but the hook doesn’t seem to line up with the striker plate, so the door won’t lock securely. What I think might be needed (but I’m open to advice): * Check alignment of the striker plate and lock * Adjust or re-seat the mechanism * Make sure the door is running square and closes smoothly * Replace parts if required (happy to cover parts separately) Photos attached for reference. Looking for someone who has experience with sliding door locks, particularly aluminium doors with Doric hardware.

Fix sliding door (bathroom) off track, minor carpentry possibly needed

$150

Potts Point NSW 2011, Australia

7th Jul 2026

I have a bathroom pocket/cavity sliding door that has come off its overhead track (see photos). I've tried to re-seat it myself without success. There's a wooden trim piece running along the side of the track mechanism that appears to be glued (not just screwed) to the door frame — I attempted to remove the screws but the trim won't budge, which is likely blocking access to the roller/track assembly. This might be a quick fix for someone experienced with sliding/cavity doors, but could also need a bit of carpentry work if the trim has to be carefully freed or replaced. Happy to increase the budget after an onsite look if more work is required. What's needed: -- Assess why the door has come off the track -- Free/remove the glued trim piece without damaging the frame (if needed) -- Re-hang the door and adjust rollers so it slides smoothly Reinstall or replace trim as needed Photos attached showing the door, the track mechanism, and the trim piece.

Excellent communication, very generous and flexible with his time and good value. Job (fixing a broken sliding bathroom door) had some extra complications and he was happy to come back to complete on a Saturday. Highly recommend. Thank you!

Looking for quotes to fix a stiff sliding door. We’ve just moved in this house and the sliding door has seen better days. Unsure what’s going on with it, if it’s the track itself but it’s stiff when sliding and gets a bit stuck half way then continues. Tried cleaning the tracks and WD40 and it’s helped but it looks like it’s scrapes the tracks top and bottom when sliding.

Great guy. Thanks so much for helping out.

Fix sliding doors so they slide properly

$160

Creswick VIC 3363, Australia

21st Mar 2026

I need a set of 'barn door' sliding doors fixed so they slide on the bottom guide correctly and stay closed when closed and align together. This possibly requires some corrective routing along the bottom of the doors (as its a little wonky) to make them run straight and runner guides re-installed on the floor (as they are floating at the moment and will not stay closed). So I am looking for someone with strong carpentry skills as there are a number of smaller carpentry related (and other 'fix-it' jobs that are required. Will provide any materials. Need someone who is located locally as there are potentially further jobs.

Problem solved. Great job.
