Top Trench Digging related questions
It heavily depends on the depth of the trench and the kind of tools to be used. A hundred feet of the trench can take about 12 hours to be dug using the proper equipment like an excavator. Doing that by hand can naturally take much longer. The type of soil also affects the time it could take to dig a trench. Sandy soils can be relatively easier to dig, while clay can be difficult.
No, Taskers usually come with professional equipment to help them finish the job quickly and efficiently. They have excavators, trenching shovels, and trenchers with them when they come to do the service. If, by any chance, you have these tools on hand and you prefer to use them, feel free to tell your Tasker beforehand.
Yes, but this means that you need to spend time and energy doing the job yourself. It can also lead to severe issues if done incorrectly. Having a professional dig your trench saves you time and avoids having mistakes. Digging deeper trenches can also be dangerous and require extensive experience. Your Tasker’s expertise can get this challenging job done safely and cost-effectively.
It depends on where you live. In some states like California, you’re required to get permission from the utilities and 811 before using a tool to move the ground, while in others, shallow holes can be dug without permission. But generally, in the US, if you’re planning to dig a hole as deep as five feet or more, you need to secure approval first. It’s best to approach your local authorities before digging a trench to ensure you’re following protocols.

What do trench digging services include?
Trenching services involve digging a large hole, usually using a trenching shovel and a trencher to help successfully lay underground wires, pipes, or structural supports. It’s also traditionally done to install or repair public drains, sewer lines, and underground utilities to serve populated areas. Trenching also has plenty of benefits if you’re taking care of your lawn! Whatever you need, Taskers can make your home improvement project possible. Here are the most common things you can expect from trenching services near you:
Straight trenches
If you live in an area with a limited surface to disturb, such as near buildings or roadways, digging straight trenches is the right choice for you. It’s a kind of trench where the sides are parallel, and the base is at a right angle. Having trench boxes or shoring is usually required as protective systems. A six-inch straight trench can also be helpful if you’re trying to control pests in your property, where you can apply a non-repellent pesticide into the soil to achieve a treatment zone.
Sloped trenches
Sloped trenches have angled sides to prevent cave-ins. Its angle is determined by trench depth, soil type, and the amount of time the trench will remain open. If you’re planning to install large pipes or culverts, this can be the right kind of trench for you. It’s also common to have sloped trenches in new construction sites with a wider path of soil.
Benched trenches
To ensure that your trench or excavation site is entirely safe, you can try benching! Benched trenches are those with sides that have been cut away to create steps. The height of these steps, otherwise known as vertical distances, is determined by the soil type. The less stable your soil is, the shallower your angles should be. It’s best to bench it if your trench needs to be up to 20 feet deep. This is to help stabilize your trench and to make it more secure. For protective systems, shielding or trench boxes are usually used.
Bell-bottom pier hole trenches
For those planning to build a certain structure, make sure to have someone dig a bell-bottom pier hole trench! The base or bottom of the trench is usually wider than the top, giving it a bell-shaped cross-section. This is typically used to install footings to support the foundation of a structure. Since these kinds of trenches have sides sloping inward over the floor of the excavation, more protective systems are usually required to keep them from collapsing.

We need a labourer to backfill a 20m long trench with gravel/metal screenings over a layer of geofabric sheeting and a tube pipe. This will require someone to have their own trailer to collect the gravel from our local sand and soil supplier 8 km away. 2 tonne of soil in total is estimated for the job (might not need that much). The cost of this job is for labour and petrol for each trip to supplier and not materials (we will organise this separately). This needs to be done by Wednesday 17 April.

Dig 2 trenches so i can then plant a row of trees for a hedge by myself. If you refer to the image, one fence will come down so it's still 2.you will not be required to plant any trees. I do not have a specific tool as such, so would ask you to provide. Unless just a shovel is needed, in which case I have Dimensions are roughly 7mx500mmx500mm for first trench and second trench is 20mx500mmx500mm
Very good worker who gets the job done. Conscientious, honest, genuine and thorough. Would highly recommend. If he doesn't respond quickly it's because he is so busy and engaged in his projects.

I need someone to dig a trench 600mm deep, and about 3-4m long. I've already started on it but don't have time to finish before conduit is installed on Wednesday. The rock (pictured) will need to be broken up on the side a bit, as the trench needs to be slightly wider than where the rock is. Either that or dug underneath that side of the rock. Other than that should be pretty straight forward. Needs to be done by Tuesday night latest.
Great work, thanks a lot mate :)

Sorry to all who have replied, the council has to send another aborist to assess trees before we can do any work so time frame has probably pushed out significantly. We have a vac company making some trenches (to do root investigations). Yet to confirm date for this. The following day I will need a couple of laborers to refill the trenches with loam. Happy to pay per hour for time. I will post photos of the trenches once they have been done.

Mini Excavator - level an area and dig a trench and more
$500
Mount Gravatt East QLD, Australia
1st Mar 2024
Got a bit ambitious with a DIY project and now keen to finish it off with some help. Corner of the block has a small hill. Plan is to level it a little and use concrete blocks (Linearwall) to build a 2 block high garden bed. Welcome any advice, thoughts on the steps currently: 1. Use mini excavator to level the area 6x4m (roughly 150mm or so deep) 2. Use mini excavator to dig a trench for 5x3m rectangle for blocks (another 150mm deep). 3. Back fill the trench with road base (located on the driveway) 4. Compact and lay blocks 5. Place the dirt back into the garden bed Notes: - Blocks haven't been ordered yet but can be organized before you come. - Please give me a quote for the first two steps only and then for everything. I will be there to assist as well and can bring a friend. - Side of the house has a 1.8m wide access, hope that's wide enough for a mini excavator. - The summer has got this place grown back with greens
Great to work with Thomas, happy to help with various things within the agreed timeframe and drives his excavator very well. Would hire him again

Thomas was 10/10. He trimmed my 5m tall pittosporum hedge, then he dug a trench 6.5m long, 50cm wide, 50cm deep, to get my garden strip ready for planting Magnolias. He is hard-working, focused, and does a quality job. I didn't have ask him to correct his work because it was done right the first time. Pleasant demeanour, easy to discuss the work at hand. No stress for me.
